I love soda! I mean like really really love soda… I even used to have my friends and family ship me different brands of soda that I couldn’t get in the DC area. Anytime I would go to the south I would be sure to buy a couple bottles of Tahitian Treat or Peach Nehi! I really just love the “sting” of soda… I just like the way the bubbles feel. What I didn’t realize was that the mass amount of soda I was drinking was doing major damage to my skin.
When it comes to caring for our skin, we tend to only think about what products we can use on our skin to make it look healthy. One of the major keys to healthy skin is also considering what we are putting inside of our bodies. Research shows that eliminating soda can be a huge factor in the health of our skin.
Why is soda so damaging? Well, soda is rich in sugar and too much of a good thing can be terrible. A 20 oz. soda has 22 packets of sugar in it. If you wouldn’t eat 22 packets of sugar then why would you drink them??
When a dermatologist looks at a persons skin, they can automatically tell if a person has too much sugar in their diet. When a person has glowing and bright skin, its usually because their diet has less sugar in it and they lead a healthier life style. Have you even seen a person whose skin is very dull and dry? This, can be a result of having too much sugar in their diet.
In a 2014 interview with Fox News, Dr. Steven Vincent a dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York states, “Soda is a factor in the aging process of the skin because it causes the body to produce all kinds of inflammatory products, I compare it to Pac-Man, going around the body eating good tissue. Diet, and especially soda, greatly affects your skin.” Soda contain Advance Glycation End Products which can speed up the process of our skin aging, and emphasize fine lines and wrinkles.
Too much sugar in our diets can also cause our pores to become clogged which leads to dry skin. When the pores clog, it prevents our skins natural oils and other topical moisturizers to seep down into our skin which makes our skin smooth and supple.
Don’t think that switching to diet sodas will make things better for your skin either. When it comes to skin hair honey, there are no short cuts. Diet sodas can alter your skins pH, which leads to acne and just like regular soda it can make your skin look dull and dry.
Trust me I know that there is nothing like an ice cold pepsi on a hot day and a soda every once in a while wont harm you. Just be cognizant of how much you are consuming daily. Honestly, two years ago it would be nothing for me to consume an entire two leader of soda in just a day and my skin severely paid for it. Now, I find alternatives to soda like seltzer or sparkling water. When I want to add a little flavor to it, I add things like mint, berries or citrus. While it doesn’t taste the same as Tahitian Treat or Nehi, it does have a refreshing taste that keeps my cravings for regular soda down.
